The decision was taken after considering that such a move would give unnecessary publicity to them and a handle to freedom fighters in the Kashmir Valley, officials in the Union Home Ministry said. "We have decided to ignore them,"
All that is due to "Azadi the only Way" convention, where Geelani had shared the stage with writer Roy and pro-Maoist leader Vara Vara Rao among others. Geelani was heckled by the audience with one of them throwing a shoe at him.

Beating the two undefeated teams in the semi-final & the final. It was a collective team effort, but the Afridi’s brilliance was simply a thing to look at. He was on the top of his game. Umar Gul & Saeed Ajmal were also keeping Pakistan in the race before Afridi’s brilliance. All in all a good World Cup. Nothing better than finishing on a winning note.

Microsoft is starting to Push Internet Explorer 8 to the existing users via Windows automatic update feature.It won't install itself.Once the download is complete you will be propted by a window having the options to install it.

Starting on or about the third week of April, users still running IE6 or IE7 on Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 will get will get a notification through Automatic Update about IE8. This rollout will start with a narrow audience and expand over time to the entire user base. On Windows XP and Server 2003, the update will be High-Priority. On Windows Vista and Server 2008 it will be Important.

IE8 will not automatically install on machines. Users must opt-in to install IE8. Users will see a Welcome screen that offers choices: Ask later, install now, or don’t install.

IE 8 is the fastest browser

A white paper published by Microsoft states that in a ‘real world’ test on browser speeds, Microsoft's team compared the performance of IE 8 (currently available as Release Candidate 1), Google Chrome 1.0 and Mozilla Firefox 3.05. Microsoft has made available a video on the study as well as a whitepaper, "Measuring Browser Performance: Understanding Issues in Benchmarking and Performance Analysis".

For the purpose of the benchmarking, Microsoft used 25 popular Web sites, based on a comScore ranking. The results clearly showed that IE 8 was the fastest browser at 12 sites, followed by Chrome (nine sites) and Firefox (four sites).

Microsoft also added that in addition to the exceptional page load performance, Internet Explorer 8 is also optimized to speed up the things that many users do day in and day out such as mapping an address, emailing links to friends, checking the weather, monitoring eBay auctions, etc.

Internet Explorer 8 can perform these tasks using anywhere from 10-50% fewer steps than other browsers.

FAT16
The FAT16 file system was introduced way back with MS–DOS in 1981, and it's showing its age. It was designed originally to handle files on a floppy drive, and has had minor modifications over the years so it can handle hard disks, and even file names longer than the original limitation of 8.3 characters, but it's still the lowest common denominator. The biggest advantage of FAT16 is that it is compatible across a wide variety of operating systems, including Windows 95/98/Me, OS/2, Linux, and some versions of UNIX. The biggest problem of FAT16 is that it has a fixed maximum number of clusters per partition, so as hard disks get bigger and bigger, the size of each cluster has to get larger. In a 2–GB partition, each cluster is 32 kilobytes, meaning that even the smallest file on the partition will take up 32 KB of space. FAT16 also doesn't support compression, encryption, or advanced security using access control lists.

FAT32
The FAT32 file system, originally introduced in Windows 95 Service Pack 2, is really just an extension of the original FAT16 file system that provides for a much larger number of clusters per partition. As such, it greatly improves the overall disk utilization when compared to a FAT16 file system. However, FAT32 shares all of the other limitations of FAT16, and adds an important additional limitation—many operating systems that can recognize FAT16 will not work with FAT32—most notably Windows NT, but also Linux and UNIX as well. Now this isn't a problem if you're running FAT32 on a Windows XP computer and sharing your drive out to other computers on your network—they don't need to know (and generally don't really care) what your underlying file system is.

The Advantages of NTFS
The NTFS file system, introduced with first version of Windows NT, is a completely different file system from FAT. It provides for greatly increased security, file–by–file compression, quotas, and even encryption. It is the default file system for new installations of Windows XP, and if you're doing an upgrade from a previous version of Windows, you'll be asked if you want to convert your existing file systems to NTFS. Don't worry. If you've already upgraded to Windows XP and didn't do the conversion then, it's not a problem. You can convert FAT16 or FAT32 volumes to NTFS at any point. Just remember that you can't easily go back to FAT or FAT32 (without reformatting the drive or partition), not that I think you'll want to.

The NTFS file system is generally not compatible with other operating systems installed on the same computer, nor is it available when you've booted a computer from a floppy disk. For this reason, many system administrators, myself included, used to recommend that users format at least a small partition at the beginning of their main hard disk as FAT. This partition provided a place to store emergency recovery tools or special drivers needed for reinstallation, and was a mechanism for digging yourself out of the hole you'd just dug into. But with the enhanced recovery abilities built into Windows XP (more on that in a future column), I don't think it's necessary or desirable to create that initial FAT partition.

When to Use FAT or FAT32
If you're running more than one operating system on a single computer , you will definitely need to format some of your volumes as FAT. Any programs or data that need to be accessed by more than one operating system on that computer should be stored on a FAT16 or possibly FAT32 volume. But keep in mind that you have no security for data on a FAT16 or FAT32 volume—any one with access to the computer can read, change, or even delete any file that is stored on a FAT16 or FAT32 partition. In many cases, this is even possible over a network. So do not store sensitive files on drives or partitions formatted with FAT file systems.

New Worm Detected by Kaspersky Attacks Facebook & MySpace

A new worm is spreading via Facebook and MySpace, turning victims' computers into zombies on a botnet, Kaspersky Lab said on Friday.

Infected machines are propagating the worm by sending messages via the social networks to friends in the network.

The messages look like they contain links to video clips. When clicked on, they prompt the recipient to download an executable file that purports to be the latest version of Flash Player. Instead, it is the worm itself.

When infected machines next log onto the social networks, they automatically send the malicious messages out to new victims grabbed from the friend list, said Ryan Naraine, security evangelist at Kaspersky.

"We've seen these types of worms before, typically around MySpace," he said. "People are more trusting of things they receive from a friend." Many people don't recognise that what they are downloading is not a legitimate Flash Player file but a malicious program, Naraine added.

Naraine urged users to exercise caution when downloading anything onto their computers, even if it appears to come from a friend, and to be diligent about applying security.

So take proper measures before using Facebook & Myspace.

What does PageLock Do?
The threat of website design theft is of significant concern to many website developers. Revealing the Headphone and Car-Kit menus

Please note that if you do these next tricks, the new menus can't be erased without retoring the factory default settings. To do these tricks you need to short-circuit the pins on the bottom of the phone next to where you plug in you charger.

1. To activate the "Headset" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "3" and "4". After a short time the word "Headset" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-6 is now enabled.

2. To activate the "Car" menu, you need to short-circuit pins "4" and "5". After a short time the word "Car" will be shown in the display. Menu 3-7 is now enabled.

THE REBOOT TRICK

This should work on all software versions of the 6110.

1. Go to the Calendar (Menu-8)

2. Make a note or reminder.

3. Enter some text into the edit box.

4. Hold "Clear" until the whole text is cleared, then press "Back".

5. Press "0". The main screen will now be showing but a space appears on the screen. (you can't see it)

6. Enter 4 digits (e.g. 1234).

7. Use the down arrow to move the cursor to the left side of the numbers and the space (Down arrow twice).

8. Now enter 6 digits and press the call button.

Wait for a few seconds, the screen should start to flash and reboots. It should alsowork on other menus like the "Profiles" menu.

EFR CALL QUALITY

To activate EFR (Enhanced Full Rate) Enter the code-

THE JAMES BOND TRICK

If you short-circuit theleft middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying.

NETWORK MONITOR

There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.

1.

Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
2.

Take apart the phone.
3.

De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64).
4.

Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup).
5.

If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF".
6.

If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF".
7.

Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone,
8.

Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.

Note - If you bought your Nokia on UK Vodafone or UK Cellnet you do not need to check this because they both transmit on GSM900, and they don't lock the phones. However if you bought your phone on UK Orange or UK One2one your phone may be blocked. The reason is that they both transmitt on GSM1800. To make a call on GSM1800 you need what is known as a "Dual band" phone. A dual band phone is able to transmit on both GSM900 and GSM1800, so they lock the phones so you can't use it with any other network simcard. If you find that your phone is locked you can try different software to unlock it. (we havn't found one that works yet), or you can ask your service provider who will gladly exchange the 10 digit code for about £35.

This is how to check the status of the 4 different locks. Aslo don't try entering the wrong number, because after 3 times it will block the phone for good.

In order to make your Firefox add-ons & Extensions to work on Firefox 3 you need to follow following simple steps.Here is the trick from Firefox developers.

Step 1: Update the install manifest
The first step -- and, for most extensions, the only one that will be needed -- is to update the install manifest file, install.rdf, to indicate compatibility with Firefox 3.

Simply find the line indicating the maximum compatible version of Firefox (which, for Firefox 2, might look like this):

Change it to indicate compatibility with Firefox 3:

Then reinstall your extension.

Note that Firefox 3 does away with the extra ".0" in the version number, so instead of using "3.0.0.*, you only need to use "3.0.*".
Note: Note that at this point more changes in Firefox 3 are expected. These changes may break some extensions, so you shouldn't release an extension with 3.0.* maxVersion to the users until the Firefox 3 release candidate is out. During the Firefox 3 Beta period, you should use 3.0b5 as your maxVersion.

There have been (and will continue to be) a number of API changes that will likely break some extensions. We're still working on compiling a complete list of these changes.
Note: If your extension still uses an Install.js script instead of an install manifest, you need to make the transition to an install manifest now. Firefox 3 no longer supports install.js scripts in XPI files.

Step 2: Ensure you are providing secure updates

If you are hosting addons yourself and not on a secure add-on hosting provider like addons.mozilla.org then you must provide a secure method of updating your add-on. This will either involve hosting your updates on an SSL website, or using cryptographic keys to sign the update information.

But the home team, the Bangalore Royal Challengers, were soundly beaten, and there was one other sour note.

A row about the restrictions placed on international news agencies Reuters, AP and AFP led to all three boycotting coverage.

It meant websites and newspapers were unable to show photos from either the match or the opening ceremony.
When the action started some of the smartest kits ever seen in cricket were on show.

The Knight Riders, part-owned by Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, wore black with gold trim, and gold helmets, pads and gloves.

Reach Run quickly

Here’s a quicker way to reach the Run dialog box, if you don’t want to go through the Start menu. Just hit the Windows key + R.

Looking for a better screen font display?

Enable ClearType, Microsoft’s trademark font display technology, for a drastic improvement in screen font rendering. Right-click anywhere on your desktop. Now select Properties. Under the Appearance tab, click Effects. Check the box for Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts, and in the drop-down menu, select ClearType. Press OK, and apply the change.

Change your mouse pointer scheme

Bored of the same old arrow? To change your mouse pointer scheme, in the Control Panel, select Mouse and go to the Pointers tab. Scroll through the available schemes, pick one that you like and click Apply.

Check that your Windows Firewall is turned on

To make sure your Windows Firewall hasn’t been accidentally disabled, go to your Control Panel and click Windows Firewall. Make sure the radio button for On (recommended) is selected. Add exceptions to your Firewall by going to the Exceptions tab and adding the programs that you think should have access to the Internet to the list of exceptions.

Instantly activate your screensaver

Display album art in your music folder thumbnails

If your music files are in WMA format, XP automatically picks up the album art and displays it, both in the folder thumbnail as well as in the Windows Media Player display. If your files are in MP3 format, you can download the album art from the Internet and then customize each folder to display it. But this takes a lot of time. A faster way around is to save each image as ‘folder.jpg’ and put it in the correct folder. Once you do this, XP will pick up that image and use it as the thumbnail for the folder, and also use the image to display in Windows Media Player while playing songs from the album.

How to stop Windows Media Player from accessing your information

You may be uncomfortable with the idea of Windows Media Player collecting your information and sending it to various websites. You can stop this. Go to the Tools menu of Windows Media Player. Select Options and then go to the Player tab. Look for the check box that says "Allow Internet sites to uniquely identify your player?" and make sure it is not selected.

Opening folders with a single click

If you’d rather not have to double-click everything to open it, here’s the way out. Go to My Computer, and select Options in the Tools menu. Choose Folder options. In the dialog box that opens, select the check box that says ‘Single-click to open an item (point to select)’, and click OK.

Making web pages available offline

You may occasionally need to refer to a website, and you may not be able to connect to the Internet at the time. An easy way out of the situation is to go to the Favourites tab in Internet Explorer, and click Add to Favourites. Sony's new Cyber-shots are expected to be available in the Asia-Pacific region sometime around April or May this year.Sony has expanded its popular Cyber-shot range with fresh models; DSC-W300 and DSC-H50.

Titanium-clad Cyber-shot DSC W300 offers a 13.6 mega pixels resolution, and boasts an "extra high speed" burst mode promising shooting 3 mega pixels photos at five frames per second (fps).

The W300 deploys a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x optical zoom lens, a 2.7-inches LCD screen, and an eye-level view finder -- among other features.

Keeping with the Sony Cyber-shot tradition, this camera too features Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization. Besides, it has a new extra high sensitivity mode (up to ISO 6400) to reduce blurriness in photographs while shooting in low-light conditions. Noise reduction is offered as a user-selectable option.

The other new Cyber-shot, the DSC-H50, offers a resolution of 9.1 mega pixels and boasts an advanced Sports Shooting Mode that allows for higher shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 of a second. Microsoft, with a new software technology, is now all set to help car drivers avoid traffic jams.

The software giant is launching a software technology called "Clearflow" for its website (http://maps.live.com/) that helps users with driving directions, to now avoid traffic jams as well.This technology has been under development for over the past five years by a group of artificial-intelligence researchers at Microsoft's Research lab.

Clearflow is an ambitious attempt to apply machine-learning techniques to the problem of traffic congestion. The system is intended to reflect the complex traffic interactions that occur as traffic backs up on freeways and spills over onto city streets, reports NewYork Times.

Taking into account details such as sporting events, current weather, and the time of day, the service will guide drivers to reach their destinations in the shortest amount of time.

Once launched, Clearflow will be available through Microsoft's maps.live.com service and would support around 72 cities in the US.

Many of us think that viruses, Trojans and other such threats happen to others. People losing money from their bank accounts or having their credit card info stolen – these are incidents that we think we are safe from, till the day it happens to us. Here’s how to find out that your E-mail is invaded.

Symptoms

John received an e-mail from a friend, with a link to a website to view an interesting video. She clicked the link. Within a few days, her computer was behaving strangely—the Internet connection had become slow; even checking e-mail was difficult. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del to see running programs didn’t show any unusual activity. Looking at the list of installed programs didn’t help either.

Prognosis

Clicking the link installed a Trojan on John’s machine. In all likelihood, her friend would not even know that such an e-mail had been sent—many Trojans, when they infect a computer, send e-mail to all contacts in the user’s Address Book.

The Trojan could do one of several things on John’s machine. It could install programs such as keyloggers, which record keyboard strokes. Keyloggers can steal usernames, passwords and other sensitive information from a PC. It could record her John’s behavior and install an adware program to show her context-sensitive ads. Or it could even turn her machine into a ‘zombie’ computer, which could then be used to send spam, viruses or worms to thousands of computers.

Prevention

It is difficult to remove Trojans and contain the damage that they might do to your machine. They can come hidden in anything—games, screensavers, images, links are some of the ways they sneak in. Therefore, be very careful in opening attachments or clicking links, even if they seem to be coming from your friends. E-mail attachments are the most favored route for spreading viruses and worms. Before you open it, it’s better to check with your friend if she has actually sent such an e-mail or not.

In a statement, Steve Ballmer, Chief Executive Officer, Microsoft, said, "With 'Surface' we are creating more intuitive ways for people to interact with technology. We see this as a multibillion-dollar category, and we envision a time when surface computing technologies will be pervasive, from tabletops and counters to the hallway mirror. Surface is the first step in realizing that vision."

'Microsoft Surface' has an intuitive user interface that works without a traditional mouse or keyboard, allowing people to interact with content and information on their own, or collaboratively with their friends and families, just like in the real world. It also has a 30-inch display in a table-like form factor that small groups can use at the same time.

'Microsoft Surface' has the ability to recognize physical objects that have identification tags similar to bar codes. This means that when a customer simply sets a wine glass on the surface of a table, a restaurant could provide them with information about the wine they are ordering, pictures of the vineyard it came from, and suggested food pairings tailored to that evening's menu

My Name is Saim Baig & i am the person Behind the blog known as “Saim’s Blog” since March 2007.I am 21 years old & doing my B.s in Electronics From SSUET Karachi.I love being on internet,this could be one reason that triggered the blogger inside me.

Could you tell us what made you decide to blog?

I started blogging during the days when “Blogspot” aka Blogger was blocked in Pakistan.It was during those days that i found that a blog is a easy way to communicate over the web & express your views over several issues.I then became a part of “Don’t Block The Blog” campaign.And after that started regular Blogging.

What do you think sets Your blog apart from other blogs?

Saim’s Blog is about what i feel about the world around me.I love being on Computer so most of the time you can find me posting about technology,Internet & computer.Sometimes politics as well,because as i said its just about what i feel about the things happening around me.And most of the time my readers agree with me.On the other hand there are very few Technology blogs in the Pakistani Blogosphere.That makes me one of few.

If you could choose one characteristic you have that brought you success, what would it be?

I say if you are loyal to your work you will always have success.People only trust you when they think that you are loyal towards them.

What was the happiest and gloomiest moment of your life?

When Pakistan Won the 1992 Cricket world cup.

If you could pick a travel destination, anywhere in the world, with no worries about how it’s paid for - what would your top 3 choices be?

I always keep my eye on behavior & language.

Do you think Pakistani politicians could benefit from the social networks and things like twitter?

Pakistani politicians don’t care about anything other then their own interests.Twitter is an other thing, i doubt majority of them don’t even have an email account.But yes if they want social networking can play a vital role in their campaigns.It would let them communicate to youth.

How Pakistani bloggers can benefit from blogs financially?

Its easy these days to get registers to programs like Google adsense & others.But in my opinion content remains the key.You must be runnning a successful blog in order to earn from it.

Do you think Pakistani bloggers tend to remain somewhat self-centered and really don’t go out of their shells? Is it the oriental style of blogging, or they are still unsure about it?

I think people are still very much unsure about things that they can do when they blog.Pakistani bloggers should think big.Also try to blog on international issues that would give them exposure to the Blogosphere.

Is it true that who has a successful blog has an awful lot of time on their hands?

Not really.It takes me about 15 to 20 minutes post an entry.

What are your thoughts on corporate blogs and what do you think the biggest advantages and disadvantages are?

Corporate blogs mostly have tasks which are targeted towards finance.It destroys the Beauty of blogging.

Does it pain you or proud you that we have made a history by electing a uniform general as our president?

I feel very ashamed of my self when i see such things happening in Pakistan.And i think its because of some selfish people who always support the Generals.If these people take a stand against the General at that time,dictatorship will end from Pakistan once & for ever.

Do you think this whole emphasis on blogs and whatever online is a significant indicator to show that the web, the social web, is becoming a very important social force?

The web has totally changed after the success of Social web.Yes i think it is becoming a social force.Now just look around and you will see American Presidential campaign on Youtube.I think this is the easiest & the biggest example i can give.

What do you think where the Pakistani blogosphere is right now?

Pakistani Blogosphere is evolving.I must say Pakistani bloggers take a better start then other regional bloggers.Every kind of blogs are coming through.And there are some very Good ones too.

Surly we can.After all Its all about the freedom of speech.

Hello everyone, Windows Vista has a very good feature that enables us to check the drive usage, so you can visually see at a glance how much space is used & how much is free.These icons look very identical to the ones in Windows Vista, but the more interesting addition is the new bar under the icon that gives you a tiny graph of the current drive space.
Here are some features that will be present in this update

The graph will show up on most of the icon sizes other than the details view.
